Complex Case Review with Invisalign: Open Bites, TMD, and Orthognathic Surgery

In this presentation, Dr. Maz Moshiri will review suggestions for designing and delivering the proper force systems necessary with Invisalign to predictably address complex open bite malocclusions nonsurgically. However, at times, patients may elect for ideal treatment... allowing for orthognathic surgery to be offered as modality of care. Increasingly, more patients are electing to use Invisalign as the orthodontic medium of choice for their orthognathic surgical treatment. The nuances of proper digital planning and overall workflow for orthognathic surgical cases with Invisalign will also be discussed. Lastly, considerations and a possible solution for therapeutic management of TMD patients will be reviewed when using clear aligners.

Dr. Maz Moshiri has been a faculty member for Align Technology since 2013. He is the co-founder of the Aligner Intensive Fellowship, an online residency that has educated nearly five thousand orthodontists worldwide on the proper treatment planning and use of clear aligners. Currently, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the orthodontic residency program at the Center for Advanced Dental Education at Saint Louis University, with a focus on clear aligners. He serves on the clinical advisory boards of Orthodontic Partners, and LightForce Orthodontics. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Voice of an Expert column for the AJODO Clinical Companion. Dr. Moshiri is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics as well as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Changing the Paradigm of Early Interceptive, Extraction, and Complex Cases with Aligner Treatment

In this presentation, Dr. Sandra Tai will discuss the rationale for early interceptive treatment. This will be demonstrated with mixed dentition treatment with Invisalign First aligners for deep bite, crowding and potential serial extraction cases.  Premolar extraction cases are the ultimate test of an orthodontic appliance, as well as the clinician’s skill. A protocol for premolar extraction cases with aligners will be discussed including tips for designing the digital treatment plan and staging extraction site closure. Finally, a few complex cases will be reviewed including impacted canines.

Dr. Sandra Khong Tai is Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, as well as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of the Pacific, San Francisco, USA.  Dr Sandra Tai is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics.
